TALKS
Curated by Olympia Tzortzi

The Art Athina Talks program covers a wide range of concerns and approaches, creating space for mediation, exchange, fermentation and “verbal” exchange of views. Through current issues that affect the field of culture and visual arts in particular, but also through discussions on fundamental topics that are always worth addressing, such exchanges, fermentations and mediations bring us to imagine and learn with and from each other.

Πρόγραμμα Planet Art

For another year, the cultural organization KROMA is actively participating in Art Athina 2024, presenting the educational program “Planet Art” during the weekend of September 21 and 22.

“Planet Art” aims to raise children’s awareness of the environment, encouraging them to connect with nature and understand the importance of its protection. Through fun and creative activities, children learn to collaborate and work as a team, developing communication and problem-solving skills. They also have the opportunity to express their creativity by experimenting with natural materials and artistic techniques that bring them closer to nature.

In addition to the 17 hourly workshops requiring reservations, “Planet Art” offers free activities accessible to all young visitors of Art Athina.

• Interactive Installation: Eco Castle: “Don’t you believe that old boxes can become something magical? At Eco Castle, we transform them into an amazing 3D castle full of drawings and paintings!”

• Kids Radio+ is participating in Art Athina with an open doodle art workshop, crafts, painting, and an ecological theme.

This year, our team is growing stronger and bigger with three exciting collaborations.

Vodafone Posidonia
Vodafone Posidonia is a program by the Vodafone Foundation, implemented in collaboration with the Oceanus Lab of the University of Patras, as part of the Foundation’s environmental initiatives. Through Vodafone Posidonia, the Vodafone Foundation aims to halt the destructive impact of climate change and human activities on coastal zones. Specifically, the Vodafone Posidonia program focuses on mapping and protecting the underwater meadows of Posidonia seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) in Greek waters, raising public awareness of their significant ecological importance, and promoting them as the lungs of the Mediterranean.

Life is for All
“Life is for All” is an initiative and organization that promotes social inclusion, equality, and awareness of human rights for all, regardless of origin, social status, or other distinctions. The organization aims to support vulnerable populations, combat social inequalities, and empower communities through educational, cultural, and environmental actions. As part of “Planet Art,” the Life for All team ensures the participation of children with neurodevelopmental disorders by providing appropriately trained staff who offer parallel support.

Kids Radio
Kids Radio 88.6 is Greece’s first children’s radio station, full of children’s songs, stories, and educational programs for kids aged 0 to 12. With the primary goal of creating an entertaining and educational environment away from screens, Kids Radio 88.6 offers a wide range of original, high-quality music and educational content for the whole family!

Title: Discovering meadows of Posidonia
Design and Implementation: KROMA

– Experiment with aquatic plants: Observe how plants can purify water, demonstrating the vital function of aquatic plants.
– Ecological Relay Race: Through fun stations, learn how to clean and protect the environment, just like the scientists at Vodafone Posidonia.
– Artistic Expression: Create your own version of the Posidonia Meadows through a fun activity.
Ages: 6-12 years
Maximum Participants: 20

Time: 12:30-13:30
Title: Planet Games
Instructor: Ecotivity
Description:
– Station 1: Eco-Quiz
Game Objective: Answer environmental quiz questions correctly and become the ultimate eco-expert! The questions vary in difficulty. Learn, laugh, and discover how important it is to protect our planet!
– Station 2: The Green Weekly Calendar
Game Objective: Create your own calendar filled with eco-friendly habits and make a fantastic collage using pieces from packaging that would otherwise end up in the trash! For each day of the week, adopt a new eco-friendly habit. From Monday to Sunday, discover fun and simple ways to protect our planet! Write down one eco-friendly habit for each day in your calendar. It could be something simple, like turning off the light when leaving the room, or something more creative, like making an eco-friendly toy from recyclable materials.
Remember: Every small action counts towards a better future!
Ages: 8-12 years
Maximum Participants: 20

Time: 13:30-14:30
Title: Recycled House
Instructors: Arkki by AKTO School of Architecture for Children and Youth
Description: The Recycled House plays with the concept of sustainability combined with the creative use of recycled materials. Inspired by environmental issues, young architects design and create works from pre-selected materials, incorporating recycled materials in creative and innovative ways.
The Arkki by AKTO program promotes creative education for children aged 4-19 in Greece and Cyprus. Based on the Finnish approach to learning, it aims to teach children skills rather than focusing on memorizing the ever-growing volume of facts. Through play, architecture, and design, the award-winning Arkki program supports children’s natural ability to wonder, explore, express their ideas, collaborate, and learn through fun, rewarding, and engaging experiences.
Ages: Kindergarten children
Maximum Participants: 10

Time: 14:30-15:30
Title: Maps and Colors: Mondrian’s Journey
Instructor: Triantafyllia Papadimitriou, Artist
Description: In this unique creative experience, children get to know Mondrian’s work and distinctive style through a theoretical presentation and then take action! Using city maps where Mondrian was active, we create impressive artworks using collage techniques, reusing paper, and giving life to materials intended for another use. This introduces the concept of recycling and reusing in a creative way!
Objective: Create a large map by combining the creations of all the children in an impressive arrangement, showcasing the power of collaboration and art!
Ages: 4-12 years
Maximum Participants: 20

Time: 15:30-16:30
Title: Ceramo-Jellyfish
Instructor: Konstantina Zolota, Art Historian-Ceramist
Description: Inspired by ocean pollution and using clay as the primary material, children create their own “different,” magical jellyfish. Then, with recyclable, everyday materials (caps, paper rolls, bags, newspapers), they decorate their jellyfish. Simultaneously, we discuss recycling and environmental consciousness through their creations.
Ages: 5-10 years
Maximum Participants: 10

Time: 16:30-17:30
Title: The Return of Nature
Instructor: Jenny Petropoulou, Visual Artist
Description: The workshop focuses on the uncontrolled urban sprawl and the adverse consequences of this, such as habitat shrinkage, pollution, and soil degradation.
In this workshop, we will discuss:
– The extensive spread of cities and concrete infrastructure, leading to habitat shrinkage and the consequences of this overuse,
– Green architecture,
– Engage with the world of Moss and create art with these small mosses (material art).
Ages: 12+ years
Maximum Participants: 15

Time: 17:30-18:30
Title: The Journey
Instructor: Despina Pantazi (Papadimitriou), Visual Artist
Description: Through environmental values, the mutual relationship between humans and nature, the timeless evolution of Greek animals, and the unique flora of our region, children are invited to perceive the environment starting from their journey from home to school.
They record the plants and animals they encounter and draw them on colorful papers. They write their wishes and send messages and drawings, helping our Earth “breathe” again, using a glass bottle where they place them, imagining it will travel across the sea. To which shore of the world will the wishes arrive? Through the details of daily life, children perceive the magic of nature.
The bottle is an authentic artwork by the artist: “The Journey,” dimensions: 21cm*27cm*29cm, material: plastic/ink/glass/ready-made objects, 2024.
Ages: 5-10 years
Maximum Participants: 15
